One of the most popular questions we hear is how much does self storage cost.
Actual costs of self storage vary enormously. Factors that may affect prices include:
Location
Location is a big factor – London and the South East tend to be considerably more expensive than elsewhere. There are big regional variations too, however, even in the same region, you can find a wide variety of prices.
Type of Storage
There are different types of self storage. Some storage facilities are like warehouses with indoor rooms. This means you may need to navigate narrow corridors and rooms can be over a number of floors, requiring you to use lifts. Other sites, like ours, use shipping containers. You can also find sites that are more like garages with a roller door.
Quality of Facility
Some self storage centres are literally a few containers in a farmer’s field. This can be a very cheap option. At the other end of the scale are purpose built sites which are well maintained with excellent security, roadways and lighting.
Length of hire
How long you intend using self storage can be a factor. Often if you can commit to signing up for a longer period, you may get a better rate. For example, we will give you 4 weeks free hire if you sign up for 12 months, or 2 weeks free when you sign up for 6 months. Look carefully at any ‘introductory offers’ though – how long do they last? What price will you be paying when the offer ends?
Security
If the security of your belongings is important to you, it’s probably worth paying a bit more. Look for a facility that has invested in significant security measures and don’t be afraid to ask questions. What security do they have? How is the site accessed out of hours? Have they had any break-ins at their site? If so, what have they done to prevent further losses?
What’s included in the price?
When you compare costs, you need to make sure that you are comparing apples with apples. Many facilities have hidden costs, so be aware that you may have to pay extra for a padlock or to be able to access your unit outside set times. Is insurance included in the price you are quoted, and if so, is it adequate for the value of your belongings?
Things to consider
- What security arrangements are there?
- What access arrangements are there – are you able to get to your belongings 24/7?
- Are there any additional costs?
- Is insurance included?
- Is the price likely to increase significantly after your introductory offer ends?
- Is it easy to access your unit to load and unload? Can you drive up to it?
