Preventing Damp & Condensation in Your Self Storage Unit

One of the most common questions we hear from new customers is about damp. People often worry that storing in a container means their things will end up wet, musty, or smelling strange after a few weeks or months. It’s understandable – you might have heard stories about condensation in containers.

But the truth is much simpler (and a lot more reassuring). Here’s what you need to know about keeping everything fresh, dry, and protected in your Space Program unit.

Will My Possessions Get Damp In A Self Storage Container?

No – your possessions won’t get damp in a self-storage container, as long as they go into the unit dry.

It’s a myth that storage containers naturally create damp or condensation. In reality, our containers are built to keep contents safe from the elements; they’re watertight, windproof, and designed for keeping their contents dry and safe from the elements.

So if your belongings are dry when you store them, they’ll stay dry while they’re inside – Simple as that.

Are Self Storage Containers Prone To Condensation?

No – storage containers aren’t prone to condensation on their own.

Think about what containers are made for, shipping containers are designed to travel at sea and stay watertight through harsh weather. Fragile and moisture-sensitive goods like TVs, laptops, phones, appliances, and even cars are shipped to the UK in containers every day. So, If containers caused damp by themselves, manufacturers would have stopped using them a long time ago.

Condensation can happen in a storage container – but only if something wet goes in. Here’s how:

  • Damp items release moisture.
  • The sun warms the container and evaporates that moisture into the air.
  • When the container cools, the moisture turns back into water droplets and can drip onto the contents.

So any condensation in a container isn’t caused by the container itself, but by wet or damp items being stored within the container.

Will My Possessions Smell If I Store Them In A Container?

In a word, no!

Your storage unit won’t create smells by itself. The only time odours become a problem is if something damp or smelly is stored in the first place – like wet clothes, muddy outdoor gear, or appliances that still have water in them.

If everything goes in clean and dry, it will come out clean and dry – without any musty or unpleasant odours.

How Can I Prevent Damp, Condensation & Smells In My Storage Container?

It’s easy to avoid condensation and keep your things fresh. A few quick checks when you’re storing items in your self storage container make all the difference:

  • Only store dry and clean items.
If something has been outside, in a shed, or in a loft, let it air out first.
  • Double-check white goods.
Washing machines, dishwashers, and fridges are common culprits. Make sure they’re fully drained and dry before storing.
  • Avoid packing away damp fabrics.
Clothes, cushions, rugs, or duvets should be completely dry and clean before they go in.
  • Use breathable packing where possible.
Cardboard boxes and fabric covers breathe better than sealed plastic bags for certain items.
  • Ask us if you’re unsure.
If you do need to store something slightly damp (like garden furniture after rain), we can advise on ways to minimise risk.

Bottom line: containers aren’t damp or condensation-prone – moisture only becomes an issue if it’s put in there, so if you only store dry items, everything inside your unit will stay dry.
