Is self storage secure?

How secure is self storage?

Self storage is a hugely popular way to create more space for either your business or your home.  It’s estimated that there’s over 2050 self storage sites in the UK currently.

Self storage is a safer way to store equipment and tools than in a van or garage which may be a target for thieves.

It’s a normal concern to be worried about security – like your home, businesses can also be vulnerable to theft and accidents such as fire or flooding.  However, you can take some sensible precautions to limit any risk.

Check-out their security arrangements

You’re trusting your belongings to the company you store with.  That’s why it’s really important to choose that company wisely.  The cheapest option may not always be the best.  Ask questions about their security – any reputable company will be quite happy to discuss this with you.  What is their security record like – have they had break-ins at the site previously?  You need a company that has invested in security measures.  Do they have CCTV?  Is it monitored around the clock?  Do they provide a padlock and is it heavy duty?  Is the site well-lit?  What are the access arrangements like – can anyone come on site whenever they like?  What are the company’s reviews like – do they mention anything about security?

Insurance

You also need to insure your belongings – if they are worth keeping, they’re worth insuring.  Does the company include insurance in the cost?   If they do, is it an adequate amount for the value of your possessions?  Keep an up-to-date inventory of your contents with their value. Most insurers will only cover for their current value – you can check similar items on eBay to see what the current selling value is to help with this.

There’s a reason why so many people use self storage.  If you choose your storage company wisely and insure your belongings, you can feel reassured that your belongings are safe.  Then you can enjoy the added space and peace of mind, that a good self storage company can provide.
